Compare the Onyx 9 Light and Olivin 2 Light to decide which Tentipi light matches your group size, season, and packing style.
Quick answer
Choose the Onyx 9 Light if you regularly camp with five or six hikers and want a spacious group shelter. Choose the Olivin 2 Light if you need a sub-two-kilo, four-season tent for one or two people.
Capacity and group size: the first filter
The Onyx 9 Light is built for a group of five to six hikers, with enough room to socialize, store packs, and sleep. It can sleep nine people only when packed tightly, so treat that as an emergency limit rather than a comfortable target. The Olivin 2 Light fits two people with gear or one person with a dog, making it a true solo or duo shelter. If your trips regularly include more than two people, the Olivin 2 Light will feel cramped fast.
Weight and season: the second filter
The Olivin 2 Light weighs just under two kilos, which matters for hiking, paddling, and cycling where every gram counts. It is also a four-season tent, so it can handle colder conditions than a three-season design. The Onyx 9 Light is heavier by nature because it is a group tipi, and it is best suited to trips where the shelter is shared or moved short distances. Neither tent is a ultralight solo option, but the Olivin 2 Light is the clear choice when you carry your shelter all day.
Lighting options and interior use
Tentipi tipis are often used with a compatible tent stove or lantern, but the catalog does not specify which lighting accessories are included or supported for these models. Check the product pages or contact Tentipi before buying a stove or light. In practice, the Onyx 9 Light gives you more interior space for a central light or stove, while the Olivin 2 Light leaves little room for extra gear beyond sleeping pads and packs. If lighting is a priority, plan your setup around the tent's footprint and venting rather than assuming accessories fit.
Decision rules for choosing between the Onyx 9 Light and Olivin 2 Light
- Group size rule: If you usually camp with three or more people, pick the Onyx 9 Light. If you camp solo or as a pair, pick the Olivin 2 Light. Count your typical group, not your maximum.
- Weight rule: If you carry your tent on hikes, bikes, or paddling trips, the Olivin 2 Light's sub-two-kilo weight is the deciding factor. If the tent stays near a basecamp or is shared among several people, the Onyx 9 Light's extra weight is easier to justify.
- Season rule: If you camp in cold or snowy conditions, choose the Olivin 2 Light for its four-season design. The Onyx 9 Light is not described as a four-season tent in the catalog, so do not assume it matches that capability. Check the product page for the Onyx 9 Light's season rating if winter use matters.
